I hope everyone had a good time with friends and family on Thanksgiving. I had a relaxing time with my family.

**The students were handed out the complete poem of Paul Revere’s Ride. Memorizing this is the fourth grade project that will be recited during project week (January 6-8). There is a date (our class is due each Friday not Wednesday) that each stanza should be memorized by. Please make it a priority to memorize a couple of lines each day, making it a much easier task to complete.

The next 15 lines of “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” (lines 16-30, through Marching down to their boats on the shore) are due Monday and 31-41 (through And moonlight flowing over all) this Friday.

The poem can be found in The Harp and Laurel Wreath on pages 94-99.

We have learned 15 root words and will be having a short quiz on them on Thursday. Also on Thursday, we will have a quiz on the parts of speech we have learned so far. The practices they will have on Monday and Tuesday will be the same format as the quiz.

In math, we’ll be working on adding and subtracting fractions. We are seeing how multiplication and division are closely related to fractions, so please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

We continue in Geology with volcanoes and geysers.

      We’ll have finished 15 chapters in Robin Hood this week and are ready for another quiz on Friday. It will cover Chapters 11-15.

      We will continue our study in the Middle Ages with Henry II, Thomas Becket and Eleanor of Aquitaine. The students who did extra credit presentations did a good job explaining their projects and keeping our interest. It was so enjoyable and the students learned so much that I will make more projects available not only in history but in science, as well, for the next semester.

We had our popcorn party and extra recess last week for collecting the most box tops in 4^th grade. Way to go 4A! We are collecting them again for the spring.

The class also did a great job at the music concert. It was such a joy watching them.

We have a quiz in math on Wednesday, covering fractions. They will bring home a study guide on Monday that should help them prepare.

Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

There is a geology quiz on Tuesday on earthquakes and tsunamis. The students got a study guide for this on Friday.

We are enjoying Robin Hood. You may have noticed there is more vocabulary this time. This book has more terms that we are unfamiliar with so that’s the reason. We also wanted to give more practice using these words in sentences.

      We will continue our study in the Middle Ages with William the Conqueror, Henry II and Thomas Becket. I’m also looking forward to hearing the extra credit presentations some of the students have chosen to do this week.

First Stanza of Paul Revere’s Ride Due on November 18^th

Please be diligent in checking in with your student that s/he is doing his or her homework each night. We’ve had too many missing assignments lately and this will affect his or her grades.

Our class collected the most boxtops and won a popcorn party! Way to go 4A!! We are collecting them again for the spring collection.

The fourth grade is also collecting boxed stuffing for our Thanksgiving food drive. The students can bring them into the class and/or they can also be dropped off on the night of the Music Concert

Last’s weeks spelling tests looked great. The spelling words are coming along well. The students are making most of their mistakes with the phonograms, so please keep practicing these at home.

We will continue fractions this week in math but we will continue to review division and multiplication. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

      ****The Usborne eFair will remain open until 11/18 to make purchases online.

      Many families were not able to locate the books they wanted at the fair because of limited quantities so this will be a great way for families to purchase the books they were searching for. If families want to have the books shipped directly to Lincoln for pick up, they will not have to pay shipping costs. We will begin fractions this week in math but we will continue to review division and multiplication. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

In geology we will continue with earthquakes and start on tsunamis.

The students will be finishing up their family coat of arms as a creative way to learn about heraldry. I’m looking forward to putting some up on our bulletin board out in the hallway. We will study more about castles and knights this week.

The students have an opportunity to do a presentation/report on a topic in the Middle Ages. This is optional, for extra credit. It is to be a 2 minute presentation on a topic that I have approved. It will be due the week of Thanksgiving but if they are ready before that, they can present it sooner.

With cold and flu season upon us, we could use some more tissues and antibacterial wipes.

We have 30 words again in Spalding this week. Please keep reviewing those phonograms. We are learning about analogies and synonyms/antonyms in class with the goal of aiding our writing. We are also continuing with capitalization and punctuation rules in grammar.

There will be a math test on Friday. It will encompass multiplication and division and of course word problems. We started a math facts program called Rocket Math today and I’m hoping this will help solidify those facts. Knowing their math facts is integral for the children to build upon what they already know. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

The students did a good job forming the layers of the Earth with their playdough. It was also a fun activity. Today we made and put together a puzzle that represented Pangaea and will aid our study of the Continental Drift Theory. We will continue to learn more about plates and layers this week.

Our Middle Ages study consists of learning about the feudal system and we’ve had some good discussions about it. Ask your child to explain this system to you. Later in the week we will discuss the role of a serf and what life was like in the city at this time. We will have a test on Chapters 6,7, 10 and 11 on Monday of next week. They have the study guide already and have been filling it out for each chapter.

I hope you had a good break! I was able to go to Virginia and visit my parents and see my oldest son which was a blessing.

As we gear up for our next quarter, there are a few things the students will need. Please have them bring in their Robin Hood books and their playdough. Also with cold season upon us, if anyone can bring in tissues and/or antibacterial wipes, that would be much appreciated.

Even though it is a short week, we will still have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday. It will just have 10 words though. The students will also be memorizing 2 sentences that will help them know when to use “ear” for the sound “er”. There will be a quiz on those sentences on Monday.

We are gearing up for the final week of the first quarter. I’ve been so impressed with how we’ve grown together as a class and am looking forward to the next 9 weeks. I have set up a volunteerspot link for you to sign up for Parent/Teacher conferences. It’s http://vols.pt/oF8oS2 .

In Language Arts, the students seem to like diagramming sentences and are looking forward to more challenging ones. They also enjoy coming up with derivatives for our Latin root words.

We have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday.

We will study the Scientific Method this week in Science using experiments to get some hands-on knowledge about what it means.

We finish up Pollyanna with a quiz on Friday on chapters 16-end. There have been some twists and turns and it’s been fun predicting what will happen. When we come back from break, we will begin Robin Hood. It will be sad to leave Pollyanna but exciting times are around the corner.

We have a quiz on Chapters 1-5 in History on Thursday. The students have been working on their study guide and should have it all filled out.

I have begun tutoring after school on Tuesdays from 3:45-4:45. If you are interested, you must sign up on sign up genius (the link is provided below) with the child’s name and the specific topic you would like him/her to be tutored in. This way we can prepare meaningful sessions with the child. This is not a homework session but a time where we can work individually or in small groups on a concept the student is struggling with.
