Please make sure you sign up for the parent/teacher conference for December 3rd or 4th. Here's the link http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b044aafac28a46-parentteacher

This week we will finish Robin Hood with a test on Friday. This assessment will be an essay. On Monday, my math class will have a test and the rest of the week will be review. We also finish Chinese history with a test on Wednesday. There will be no Spalding this week : )

When the students come back from the break, they will be reciting "Paul Revere's Ride". Please make sure to help your student memorize the poem by then.

Sunday, December 4, 2016

Dear 4A:

Here are some dates to be aware of:

December 15th: The fourth grade class will be having a Middle Ages feast and activity day. Please look for a volunteer sign-up in the next few days.

December 14th-16th: The last Wednesday-Friday before break will be early release at 12:30. Please make arrangements for you child.

December 19th-January 4th: Winter Break

January 3rd-4th: Mandatory Parent/Teacher Conferences. I will be sending you a link on Monday to sign up for a time to meet.

January 5th-6th: The students will be reciting "Paul Revere's Ride". You are welcome to come and watch your child, just let me know (when the date gets closer) that you want to be present and I'll let you know the time frame.

Speaking of "Paul Revere's Ride", as we've been practicing in class, I've noticed that many are not keeping up with the required stanzas. Please continue putting in the effort, before the break, to memorize this poem. I do not want this to add any stress to you during the holidays. I have the students write "memorize poem 10 mins/day" in their agendas each day.

Academics for the week:

Test on Chapters 7-12 of Robin Hood on Wednesday.

Test on Magnetism and Electricity on Friday.

The students have already gotten the study guides for both of these tests.

Final typewritten 5 paragraph essay due Wednesday.

We are continuing with Chinese history in history and measurements in math.

Please have your child complete any missing work and correct any tests/assignments that they did not do well on.

Have a great week!
Mrs. Gore

Sunday, November 27, 2016

Dear 4A:

I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving! I had a restful and happy time with friends and family and I was reminded of how thankful I am for each of you and your children!

This week we will start a unit on Chinese history and a unit on measurement in math. We will continue in Robin Hood in literature and electricity in science. Please have your child bring in a D cell or 9-volt battery.

**Please continue helping your child memorize "Paul Revere's Ride". I'm encouraging each student to put in 10 minutes a day. I would like them to have it memorized by the time we go on winter break, so they can just work on the presentation and hopefully give you a break, too.**

The administration has begun a new policy. If your child has missing work, you will get an email from Jupiter (our electronic grading system) once a week. Please encourage your child to make up any missing assignments. Let me know if you have any questions or if you need anything clarified.

Once again, thank you for entrusting your precious child with me!
Mrs. Gore

This week in 4A:

Usborne Book Fair – September 29th -October 5th
Friday, October 7thEarly release
Fall Break - October 10th-14th
Mandatory Fall Conferences – October 17-19th

Our final geology test will be on Thursday. They already have their study guide for this.

Our second test in Middle Ages will be on Friday. They will be getting the study guide for this on Tuesday.

As always, there will be a spelling/phonogram test on Friday.

We will begin to talk about the poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride”, this week. Memorizing this poem is the big project for fourth grade. Each student will recite it during project week which occurs the first three days after the students get back from winter break (Jan. 4-6). We will be memorizing it systematically throughout next quarter.

Our Read-a-Thon officially starts Monday. Each student brought home a login with instructions on how to get started. This is an optional activity; it has no bearing on the student’s grade. It is just a fun activity that can help raise funds for our classrooms and library.

Students can log in and start reading/logging time NOW. However, the Read-a-Thon officially starts Monday, so any minutes reading they log this weekend won't count in terms of ranking students by minutes read, etc. The minutes that students read during class time and for their reading logs should also be logged in each day.

Please continue reviewing phonograms and math facts with your child!

I hope that each one of you has a restful, fun, and safe break! I’ll see you for your individual conference on October 17-19th.

Thank You!

WOW! Our last week of school! I can’t believe this year is almost over. I want to thank you for entrusting your child to me this year. What a blessing it has been getting to know your child and you.

We have a busy week.

On Monday, the final type-written essay (with title page and works cited page included) is due – they will also need their note cards, outline, and rough draft turned in. There is a science test and we finish reading Carry On, Mr. Bowditch.

We begin our presentations on Tuesday, they will continue through Wednesday and Thursday. Don’t forget the homemade, inexpensive souvenir. We will have a Continental Breakfast to help celebrate the end of our unit on The Revolutionary War on Wednesday morning.

The last literature test on Carry On, Mr. Bowditch will be on Wednesday.

Our final Spalding test will be on Friday.

Remember Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are early release days. The students are out at 12:30.
I will have them clean out things and bring them home each day so by Friday it should not be too overwhelming.

I hope everyone finishes strong. If there is missing work or corrections to be made, they must be turned in this week.

I will be leaving to visit my parents on May 29th-June 1st. Then my husband, daughter and I will go to Jordan on June 4th to help serve Syrians refugees there. So I will be out of the country for a couple of weeks. I will have my computer at my parents but not in Jordan, hopefully, if you need to get in touch with me, you can do it before June 4th or it will have to wait until I get back.

Thank you for helping to make this a very memorable and special year for me!!

Dear parents and students of 4A,

I want to give each of you a very hardy THANKS! You have made me feel so much appreciated and I have been blessed to have each and every one of you in my class. It has also been a blessing to get to know all the parents, as well.

I want to especially thank Mrs. Smith for her dedicated service to our class. She has put in many hours in volunteering and coordinating and I am very grateful for her service.

As we wind down the year, I want to encourage you to help your child finish strong. We still have a lot of academics left. We will be going strong all the way up to May 27th. The final week will include presentations for the history project and tests.

I’ve noticed the students are getting chattier as the end draws near and I will be reiterating the expectation of not interrupting and the need to raise hands to comment or question, again this week. There may be some extra writing until this calms down again.
_____________________

We will be doing our final Galileo testing Monday.

There is a quiz on Chapters 9-16 of Carry On, Mr. Bowditch on Tuesday.

We will work on outlining the 5 paragraph essay for their Revolutionary War person and they will begin their rough draft at the end of the week. They should have enough information on their index cards to start outlining on Monday.

In math, we will continue learning about volume.

We will also continue studying the Respiratory System in science.

Thank you for entrusting your child to me, I take the responsibility seriously.
It is also a joy : )

What a great time we had on field day! A special thank you to the moms and dad who came out and helped equip, encourage, and carry things for our class!!

As we gear up for the final quarter, there are a few things to be aware of. We are starting a new book Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham, so please get this ASAP if you haven’t already. In math, we are starting geometry and the students will need a protractor. This is the half circle instrument that enables you to measure angles. They are usually less than a dollar and can be picked up almost anywhere.

I am so pleased with how well the class learned decimals. They also did a great job on their science test on magnetism and electricity. Their persuasive essays were really good, too : )

This week we will begin our study of the American Revolution in history. Since we have the Science AIMS test on Thursday, we will be reviewing some concepts in Science this week but the next week we begin a unit on plants.

Just a few reminders: All boys must wear a belt. Girls must have one with shorts or pants. Shirts must be tucked in at all times. White socks and shoes only. Students can’t wear non-regulation sweaters or jackets inside the building. Hair accessories must match the uniform. Girls are permitted to wear stud earrings but no other jewelry (except for religious purposes) and no fingernail polish.

Please do not send sugary snacks for snack time.

If anyone is able to donate some Band-Aids, it’d be much appreciated. And, as always (it seems), we can use tissue. You have been so generous already with them but, boy, do we go through them fast.

There is no school this Friday, March 25.

Please clear out the take-home folder. Your student can clear out all papers pertaining to Prince Caspian, Poetry, Drama, AZ History, Chemistry, Magnetism and Electricity : )

Athletic Field Day is this Thursday, March 10th. Students must pack a lunch for school on Thursday as hot lunch will not be offered. Students will also be permitted to wear athletic clothing to school on Thursday. Just as Archway provides guidelines for dress code in the classroom, it is important to project the image of professionalism in our athletic attire as well. Please refer to page 50 in the Family Handbook for those guidelines. Each class has a team color and name (based on ancient Greece and surrounding city-states) so students are encouraged to wear their class color to represent their section!

KA/3A: Red - Sparta
KB/3B: Orange - Croton
KC/3C: White - Macedonia
1A/4A: Yellow - Thebes
1B/4B: Green - Crete
1C/4C: Black - Persia
2A/5A: Blue - Athens
2B/5B: Purple - Corinth
2C/5C: Grey - Argos

We are still looking for a few more volunteers to help organize and facilitate the athletic events. We are also looking for anyone willing to let Archway borrow their pop-up tent for shade or rolling coolers for water and popsicles. If you are able, please follow this link to sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e084fada62ca2f85-athletic. Please email Coach Cook with any questions: dcook@archwaylincoln.org. Thank you for your support!

I also need one more parent volunteer to help out in the class during lunch and to be with us on the field to aid with water etc. Please email me and let me know if you are available to do this.

This quarter went by quickly. With just a few days left, I want to make sure all missing work is turned in. Partial credit is better than a 0, so please look in your child’s agenda to see if anything is missing.

We will be having a quiz on multiplying/dividing decimals on Wednesday and a test on magnetism/electricity on Thursday.

The final typewritten 5 paragraph persuasive essay on a tenth virtue is due on Tuesday.

We won the boxtop competition again!!! Thank you so much for contributing! Keep collecting them, there is another competition next quarter : )

Thanks for the tissues, we can still use more: )

Monday, February 29, 2016

Athletic Field Day is coming March 10th! The Archway students will compete in a half day of ancient Greek and modern-day Olympic themed events such as baton relay races, shot put and more! Students will be creating ancient Greek cuffs to wear during their competitions. Please send toilet paper and paper towel rolls to school for them to prepare and decorate in Art class.

We are looking for 15-20 volunteers to help organize and facilitate the athletic events. The day will be split up into two parts with grades K-2 participating in the morning followed by grades 3-5 participating in the afternoon. Volunteers will receive early communication regarding the events and need to be available for a walk-through 30-45 minutes prior to the event.

Please follow this link to sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e084fada62ca2f85-athletic. Please email Coach Cook with any questions: dcook@archwaylincoln.org. Thank you for your support!

Please don’t send snacks with sugar in them for snack time.

As we are quickly coming to the close of the quarter, please make sure your child has made up all of their missing work. I have been writing it in their agenda, so please check it each night.

This week the students will have a take home, open note quiz for history and their regular spelling test. Next week they will have a math test on Wednesday or Thursday and a science test on Wednesday or Thursday. I’ll have to see how the week goes to determine which is which.

They will be typing up their final draft of their persuasive essay and that will be due next week also.

*This class goes through tissues at an alarming rate! We are out again. If you could bring in a box or two, it would be greatly appreciated. We could also use more band aids.

Please clear out the “take home” folders regularly. The only thing that should be in there is homework to return and any papers that help with that homework.
