I hope everyone is having a great break. Mine has been a blessing and it will continue as my son and his wife come in from Virginia this week and we can all be together again : )

I just wanted to put in a few reminders and announcements.

First, I hope everyone has been diligently memorizing Paul Revere’s Ride to be recited on the 6th, 7th, and 8th of January. This is the fourth grade project and is for a grade. Please work on articulation, fluency and expression.

Next, we will be going to the MIM (Musical Instrument Museum) on Friday, January 15th. This link serves as a permission slip. https://archwaylincoln.mycustomevent.com/ShoppingCart.aspx?com=detailview&iid=38&&returncom=productlist&source=search
Most of you probably already signed up at the beginning of the year but I know we have some newer students who may not have and it may have gone under the radar for others. Please make sure you sign up, I’m looking forward to going with the whole class.

Last, you probably noticed that there are parent/teacher conferences scheduled for the 4th and 5th of January. These are by invitation only. I will be emailing the parents whom I would like to meet with.

Enjoy the rest of your break and feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Sunday, December 13, 2015

We will be having an end of the semester Middle Ages Party on Friday, December 18th. If anyone is interested in helping, please send me an email and I’ll pass your name on to the parents who are putting it together. We can have 3 parents help out.

We also have a field trip coming up on January 15th to the MIM (Musical Instrument Museum). We can take 3 parent chaperons, so I’ll make it first come, first served. Just email me if you would like to help out.

**The students were handed out the complete poem of Paul Revere’s Ride. Memorizing this is the fourth grade project that will be recited during project week (January 6-8). There is a date (our class is due each Friday not Wednesday) that each stanza should be memorized by. Please make it a priority to memorize a couple of lines each day, making it a much easier task to complete.

The next 14 lines of “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” (lines 57-72 “A second lamp in the belfry burns.”) are due this Friday.

The poem can be found in The Harp and Laurel Wreath on pages 94-99.

In math, we’ll continue in fractions this week. We are seeing how multiplication and division are closely related to fractions, so please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

The geology test will cover volcanoes, geysers and rocks/erosion. The test will be on Thursday. We will have ongoing review. The students have their study guides and have been filling them out as we go.

We finish Robin Hood with a quiz on Friday.

I have started letting the students eat their lunch in the classroom a few days a week so we can discuss comprehension questions in Robin Hood, science and history. This is an optional time to have extra discussions.

Here’s some helpful information about the Tax Credit:

       Tax Credit 2015

Thanks to each one of you for your continued support of Archway Lincoln and the Lincoln community.
Archway Lincoln depends on Tax Credit contributions from our families and friends to fund extra-curricular and character-building activities. Married couples can contribute up to $400 and individuals up to $200 and receive a dollar-for-dollar credit against their Arizona state taxes.
While each of you are spending quality time with your relatives, this is a wonderful time to ask grandparents, relatives, and friends to support Archway Lincoln through our Arizona Public School Tax Credit Drive…at no cost to you!
And what better way to spread some holiday cheer than to have a friendly Tax Credit student competition.
  • For EVERY +1 your student brings into Archway Lincoln, they will receive a raffle ticket, which will be entered into a drawing with a chance to win an iPad-mini.
  • The class who is able to receive the MOST +1’s per student will receive a free spaghetti dinner with their family served by the faculty.
The last day to take advantage of this offer is 12/31/2015. The drawing will take place the week of 1-11-2016.
Please direct any questions to Shannon Graffius at Sgraffius@archwaylincoln.org

Thank you so much for the tissues that have come in. It is much appreciated!

We are still collecting box tops : )

Please clear out the “take home” folders regularly. The only thing that should be in there is homework to return and any papers that help with that homework.

The poem can be found in The Harp and Laurel Wreath on pages 94-99.

We have learned 15 root words and will be having a short quiz on them on Thursday. Also on Thursday, we will have a quiz on the parts of speech we have learned so far. The practices they will have on Monday and Tuesday will be the same format as the quiz.

In math, we’ll be working on adding and subtracting fractions. We are seeing how multiplication and division are closely related to fractions, so please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

We continue in Geology with volcanoes and geysers.

We’ll have finished 15 chapters in Robin Hood this week and are ready for another quiz on Friday. It will cover Chapters 11-15.

We will continue our study in the Middle Ages with Henry II, Thomas Becket and Eleanor of Aquitaine. The students who did extra credit presentations did a good job explaining their projects and keeping our interest. It was so enjoyable and the students learned so much that I will make more projects available not only in history but in science, as well, for the next semester.

Thank you so much for the tissues. It is much appreciated!

No school Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday – I hope everyone enjoys time with family and friends!

**The students were handed out the complete poem of Paul Revere’s Ride. Memorizing this is the fourth grade project that will be recited during project week (January 6-8). There is a date that each stanza should be memorized by. Please make it a priority to memorize a couple of lines each day, making it a much easier task to complete.

They did a great job with the first 15 lines!
Please memorize the next 15 lines of “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” this week.

We had our popcorn party and extra recess last week for collecting the most box tops in 4th grade. Way to go 4A! We are collecting them again for the spring.

The class also did a great job at the music concert. It was such a joy watching them.

We have a quiz in math on Wednesday, covering fractions. They will bring home a study guide on Monday that should help them prepare.

Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

There is a geology quiz on Tuesday on earthquakes and tsunamis. The students got a study guide for this on Friday.

We are enjoying Robin Hood. You may have noticed there is more vocabulary this time. This book has more terms that we are unfamiliar with so that’s the reason. We also wanted to give more practice using these words in sentences.

We will continue our study in the Middle Ages with William the Conqueror, Henry II and Thomas Becket. I’m also looking forward to hearing the extra credit presentations some of the students have chosen to do this week.

Thank you so much for the tissues, hand sanitizer and band aids that have come in. It is much appreciated!

There is a date that each stanza should be memorized by. Please make it a priority to memorize a couple of lines each day, making it a much easier task to complete.

Please be diligent in checking in with your student that s/he is doing his or her homework each night. We’ve had too many missing assignments lately and this will affect his or her grades.

Our class collected the most boxtops and won a popcorn party! Way to go 4A!! We are collecting them again for the spring collection.

The fourth grade is also collecting boxed stuffing for our Thanksgiving food drive. The students can bring them into the class and/or they can also be dropped off on the night of the Music Concert
.
Last’s weeks spelling tests looked great. The spelling words are coming along well. The students are making most of their mistakes with the phonograms, so please keep practicing these at home.

We will continue fractions this week in math but we will continue to review division and multiplication. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

In geology we will learn about volcanoes this week.

We are enjoying Robin Hood. You may have noticed there is more vocabulary this time. This book has more terms that we are unfamiliar with so that’s the reason. We also wanted to give more practice using these words in sentences. There is a quiz on Tuesday on Chapters 6-10.

The students came up with creative Coat of Arms and some have been placed on the wall in our classroom. We will have a test on Chapters 8, 9, and 12 on Wednesday.

****The Usborne eFair will remain open until 11/18 to make purchases online.
Many families were not able to locate the books they wanted at the fair because of limited quantities so this will be a great way for families to purchase the books they were searching for. If families want to have the books shipped directly to Lincoln for pick up, they will not have to pay shipping costs. This shipping method will take longer than if a parent opts to have them shipped to their home. Here is the link to view the catalog online: d4163.myubam.com

Last’s weeks spelling tests looked great. The spelling words are coming along well. The students are making most of their mistakes with the phonograms, so please keep practicing these at home. There will only be 20 words this week but still 10 phonograms : )

We will begin fractions this week in math but we will continue to review division and multiplication. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

The students have an opportunity to do a presentation/report on a topic in the Middle Ages. This is optional, for extra credit. It is to be a 2 minute presentation on a topic that I have approved. It will be due the week of Thanksgiving but if they are ready before that, they can present it sooner.

With cold and flu season upon us, we could use some more tissues and antibacterial wipes.

Please clear out the “take home” folder as well as the Language Arts and History folders.

Monday, October 26, 2015

I hope your week went well. We are back I the swing of things.

Please be diligent in checking in with your student and his or her homework. We’ve had too many missing assignments lately and this will affect his or her grades.

We have 30 words again in Spalding this week. Please keep reviewing those phonograms. We are learning about analogies and synonyms/antonyms in class with the goal of aiding our writing. We are also continuing with capitalization and punctuation rules in grammar.

There will be a math test on Friday. It will encompass multiplication and division and of course word problems. We started a math facts program called Rocket Math today and I’m hoping this will help solidify those facts. Knowing their math facts is integral for the children to build upon what they already know. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

The students did a good job forming the layers of the Earth with their playdough. It was also a fun activity. Today we made and put together a puzzle that represented Pangaea and will aid our study of the Continental Drift Theory. We will continue to learn more about plates and layers this week.

We are enjoying Robin Hood. You may have noticed there is more vocabulary this time. This book has more terms that we are unfamiliar with so that’s the reason. We also wanted to give more practice using these words in sentences. We will have our first test on Robin Hood on Tuesday next week. A study guide will go home with them over the weekend.

Our Middle Ages study consists of learning about the feudal system and we’ve had some good discussions about it. Ask your child to explain this system to you. Later in the week we will discuss the role of a serf and what life was like in the city at this time. We will have a test on Chapters 6,7, 10 and 11 on Monday of next week. They have the study guide already and have been filling it out for each chapter.

The students have an opportunity to do a presentation/report on a topic in the Middle Ages. This is optional, for extra credit. It is to be a 2 minute presentation on a topic that I have approved. It will be due the week of Thanksgiving but if they are ready before that, they can present it sooner.

Wednesday will be the last day to bring in boxtops!!!

With cold and flu season upon us, we could use some more tissues and antibacterial wipes.

Please clear out the “take home” folder as well as the Language Arts and History folders. Pollyanna and meteorology should be taken out.

Monday, October 19, 2015

I hope you had a good break! I was able to go to Virginia and visit my parents and see my oldest son which was a blessing.

As we gear up for our next quarter, there are a few things the students will need. Please have them bring in their Robin Hood books and their playdough. Also with cold season upon us, if anyone can bring in tissues and/or antibacterial wipes, that would be much appreciated.

Even though it is a short week, we will still have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday. It will just have 10 words though. The students will also be memorizing 2 sentences that will help them know when to use “ear” for the sound “er”. There will be a quiz on those sentences on Monday.

In math, we will study estimation in problem solving. We will focus on division again this week. We continue to incorporate the model method of teaching into each lesson. Knowing their math facts is integral for the children to build upon what they already know. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

We will start Geology this week in Science and will use the playdough for a hands-on demonstration about the layers of the Earth.

In literature we will begin Robin Hood. We will be able to integrate this with our continued study in the Middle Ages. I’ve also given the students an opportunity to do a presentation/report on a topic in the Middle Ages. This is optional, for extra credit. It is to be a 2 minute presentation on a topic that I have approved. It will be due the week of Thanksgiving but if they are ready before that, they can present it sooner.

***Remember Robin Hood and playdough : )***

We are collecting box tops!!!

Please clear out the “take home” folder as well as the Language Arts and History folders. Pollyanna and meteorology should be taken out.

Monday, October 5, 2015

We are gearing up for the final week of the first quarter. I’ve been so impressed with how we’ve grown together as a class and am looking forward to the next 9 weeks. I have set up a volunteerspot link for you to sign up for Parent/Teacher conferences. It’s http://vols.pt/oF8oS2 .

In Language Arts, the students seem to like diagramming sentences and are looking forward to more challenging ones. They also enjoy coming up with derivatives for our Latin root words.

We have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday.

In math, we will study estimation in problem solving. We will focus on division this week. We continue to incorporate the model method of teaching into each lesson. Knowing their math facts is integral for the children to build upon what they already know. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

We will study the Scientific Method this week in Science using experiments to get some hands-on knowledge about what it means.

We finish up Pollyanna with a quiz on Friday on chapters 16-end. There have been some twists and turns and it’s been fun predicting what will happen. When we come back from break, we will begin Robin Hood. It will be sad to leave Pollyanna but exciting times are around the corner.

We have a quiz on Chapters 1-5 in History on Thursday. The students have been working on their study guide and should have it all filled out.

I have begun tutoring after school on Tuesdays from 3:45-4:45. If you are interested, you must sign up on sign up genius (the link is provided below) with the child’s name and the specific topic you would like him/her to be tutored in. This way we can prepare meaningful sessions with the child. This is not a homework session but a time where we can work individually or in small groups on a concept the student is struggling with.

We are collecting box tops!!!

Please clear out the “take home” folder as well as the Language Arts and History folders.

Sunday, September 27, 2015

Please have your child clean out their Language Arts folder of all Wizard of Oz papers and their History folders of all papers pertaining to mountains. Some of their folders are very full and it is hard for them to find the papers they need now.

The fourth grade teachers will begin tutoring after school on Tuesdays from 3:45-4:45. If you are interested, you must sign up on sign up genius (the link is provided in the left column) with the child’s name and the specific topic you would like him/her to be tutored in. This way we can prepare meaningful sessions with the child. This is not a homework session but a time where we can work individually or in small groups on a concept the student is struggling with.

I can tell the students have been reviewing their phonograms. There are still a few that are giving them trouble but I’m sure with more practice they will know them all soon. We will have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday.

Everyone did a great job in reciting their poems; I was very proud of them. We will have poems they memorize periodically so they can build up to their major project of reciting “Paul Revere’s Ride” near the end of the school year.

We will begin diagramming simple sentences this week in Language Arts. We are also continuing with making summaries and taking dictation.

In math, we will study estimation in problem solving. We continue to incorporate the model method of teaching into each lesson. There will be a test on Friday. Knowing their math facts is integral for the children to build upon what they already know. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

We are finishing meteorology with a test on Wednesday. Our next topic will be the scientific method.

We’ve had some great discussions about Pollyanna. Ask your child how to play the glad game, maybe you can play it as a family. There will be a quiz on Thursday on chapters 1-15.

I’ve noticed that the agendas are not getting signed everyday by all the parents. As a result, some children are not turning in all their assignments. Please make sure that these are signed after your child shows you all their work that way we can be sure they are getting everything finished. Thanks for partnering with me in this.

We are collecting box tops!!!

Please clear out the “take home” folder as well as the Language Arts and History folders.

Monday, September 21, 2015

IMPORTANT DATE: Spalding Night is September 22nd from 6:30-8. Come on out to gain a better understanding of this essential subject.

Please make sure your child is reviewing their phonograms each night, find out which ones give them pause and zero in on them. We will have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday
.
In Language Arts, we’re moving into verbs this week. We are also continuing with making summaries and taking dictation.

The students seem to understand the Order of Operations in math, this will be a good foundation for future lessons. We will have a short quiz on this on Wednesday. We will be focusing on learning the “model” method that Singapore uses this week, starting with addition. I know you may be thinking “addition?", my student is beyond that. The reason is it is very important they comprehend how to break down word problems using this method and we must start with the basics. Knowing their math facts is integral for the children to build upon what they already know. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child.

We are continuing in meteorology with climate and weather maps and symbols. We will also review throughout the week to prepare for the Meteorology test on Tuesday the 29th.

The students did well on their mountains test and we have been studying the Middle Ages. We will be on this unit for a while. Please help your student clean out their folders of all mountain worksheets as they will not need these in them anymore.

We are finished with The Wizard of Oz. I hope your student enjoyed going deeper into this book. Your student can also take out all of these papers, too, so there is room for Pollyanna. Please have them bring this book in and they can take home The Wizard of Oz.

Please clear out the “keep at home” side of the “take home” folder each day and check and sign the agenda everyday as well!

Monday, September 14, 2015

IMPORTANT DATES: Singapore Night is this Thursday, September 17th from 6:30-7:30. Spalding Night is September 22nd from 6:30-8. Come on out to gain a better understanding of these 2 essential subjects.

Keep in mind that this Friday (Sept. 18) is a half day. Students should be picked up at 12:30.

We will be reviewing phonograms 55-70 this week. Please make sure your child is reviewing them each night. We will have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday.

In Language Arts, we have been studying how to make plural nouns and practicing capitalization rules. On Tuesday we will have a quiz on these.

We will study Order of Operations in math this week. Knowing their math facts is integral for the children to build upon what they already know. Please review multiplication facts regularly with your child. There are many computer math drill games that can help in this area. One strategy I’ve used with my children is they must do 10-15 minutes of drill before they can play a computer game.

We are continuing in meteorology with tornadoes and hurricanes. On Monday, the students take their mountain assessment and then we will begin our unit on the Middle Ages.

We finish The Wizard of Oz with an assessment on Thursday. On Friday, we will begin an introduction to Pollyanna. Please make sure your child brings this book in on Friday.

My computer is back up and running well. Thank you IT!

Please clear out the “keep at home” side of the “take home” folder each day and check and sign the agenda everyday as well!

Monday, September 7, 2015

It was great seeing so many parents at curriculum night! Thanks for coming out and finding out more about what goes on in our classroom.

IMPORTANT DATES: Singapore Night is September 17th from 6:30-7:30. Spalding Night is September 22nd from 6:30-8. Come on out to gain a better understanding of these 2 essential subjects.

We will be learning phonograms 55-72 this week. Please make sure your child is reviewing them each night. We will also begin our cursive instruction this week.

In Language Arts, we have been memorizing pronouns and on Thursday we will have a quiz on them. We will also analyze a poem and continue making summaries and taking dictation this week.

We continue multiples and factors in math. They seem to really grasp this well which is good because we have an assessment on it on Friday. Knowing their math facts is integral for the children to build upon what they already know. There are many computer math drill games that can help in this area. One strategy I’ve used with my children is they must do 10-15 minutes of drill before they can play a computer game.

We are continuing in meteorology with atmosphere, air masses and weather fronts. While in geography, we will finish our study of mountains with an assessment on Thursday.

Last Friday, we finished chapter 15 in The Wizard of Oz. We will work on a review and study guide on Tuesday in preparation for an assessment on Chapters 8-15 on Wednesday.

I hope you all had a great 3-day weekend! I enjoyed spending time with my family.

Unfortunately, since Saturday, I have not been able to get into my school email. This has caused me some anxiety because I want to keep the lines of communication open and this is the easiest way. I hope to remedy this problem ASAP but until then if you need to contact me, my extension at school is 207 and you can leave a note in the “take home” folder or agenda.

Please clear out the “keep at home” side of the “take home” folder each day and check and sign the agenda everyday as well!

Thank you so much for the boxes of tissues and wipes. Supplies are always greatly appreciated!

Tuesday, September 1, 2015

IMPORTANT DATES: Our Curriculum Night is Wednesday, September 2 from 6:30-8pm. This date is for 3rd through 5th grade. All ESS and Specials Teachers will be at both nights as well. I’m looking forward to seeing one parent of every student there. (No children, please.)

PICTURE DAY: This Thursday, September 3rd!!

Spalding is coming along. It is something that we practice every day. The students will have homework every night in the form of spelling practice with markings and rules and reviewing the phonogram cards with a parent or sibling. Practicing at home will really aid in their comprehension. There has been confusion about who has paid for the cards, this stems from the fact that there was a separate place on the order form for the cards (the reason was the administration didn’t want families paying for more than one set of cards.) If you have not yet received your cards, can you call the office and ask them to help you determine if you have ordered them or not? If you already have them please review them nightly with your child. We have learned 1-54 and will continue with those this week.

In Language Arts, we are learning capitalization rules and will go on to pronouns. We will also memorize a poem and continue making summaries and taking dictation this week.

We begin multiples in math which means the students need to understand and use multiplication. Knowing their math facts is integral for the children to build upon what they already know. There are many computer math drill games that can help in this area. One strategy I’ve used with my children is they must do 10-15 minutes of drill before they can play a computer game.

We are continuing in meteorology with air pressure and density and the atmosphere. While in geography, we will begin our study of mountains.

We meet Oz this week and will learn more about characterization which enables us to incorporate our core virtues. Literature is a great way to understand and discuss our virtues. Reading with the students is my favorite part of the day, they share many insightful comments.

This weekend is a 3-day holiday and a no homework weekend! I hope you and your family have an enjoyable Labor Day.

You can communicate with me via email or the “take home” folder. Just put your note on the “complete and return” side and I will see it. I will get back to you within 24 hours. Please clear out the “keep at home” side each day and check and sign the agenda everyday as well!

It’s beginning to be cold season. We already have gone through a few boxes of tissues so if you could bring in some tissue boxes, it would be greatly appreciated!

We have 2 openings in our class for a liaison. This is a volunteer who would help coordinate activities, reading groups, etc. If you are interested please email me. Thank you!

Sunday, August 23, 2015

IMPORTANT DATES: Our Curriculum Night is Wednesday, September 2 from 6:30-8pm. This date is for 3rd through 5th grade. The Kindergarten through 2nd grade Curriculum Night will be Thursday, August 27 from 6:30-8pm. All ESS and Specials Teachers will be at both nights as well.

The class seems to be getting the routine down for Spalding. Practicing at home will really aid in their comprehension. I hope to get a set of phonogram cards to everyone early this week. When everyone has them I will have the students write in their agenda to review them at home. If you already have them please review them nightly with your child. We have learned 1-54 and will continue with those this week.

In Language Arts, we are studying plural and proper nouns and will begin making summaries and taking dictation this week.

We will be practicing rounding and estimation in math. Word problems are incorporated into many lessons, so they are learning the model method as a strategy.

We are continuing in meteorology with humidity, atmosphere, air pressure and density. While in geography, we are learning to find places using latitude and longitude and how to understand time zones. Soon we will begin our study of mountains.

We’ve read the first three chapters of Wizard of Oz and the students and I are enjoying it. We will pick up the pace this week. There will be an assessment of Chapters 1-7 on Wednesday.

I will collect the Reading Log tomorrow (Monday). I’m going to make it so it’s due on Friday instead of Monday, so this week will only have Mon-Thurs.

You can communicate with me via email or the “take home” folder. Just put your note on the “complete and return” side and I will see it. I will try to get back to you within 24 hours. Please clear out the “keep at home” side each day and check and sign the agenda everyday as well!

We have 2 openings in our class for a liaison. This is a volunteer who would help coordinate activities, reading groups, etc. If you are interested please email me. Thank you!

I have enjoyed getting to know your children. They are an inquisitive and lively group. I’m excited about what we will all learn over the next school year.

IMPORTANT DATES: Our Curriculum Night is Wednesday, September 2 from 6:30-8pm. This date is for grades 3-5. The K-2 Curriculum Night will be Thursday, August 27 from 6:30-8pm. All ESS and Specials Teachers will be at both nights as well.

This week we mainly went over procedures, the academics were minimal. We took assessments in spelling and math and I got a feel for where they are in grammar and how well they write.

We will begin each subject in earnest this week. In Spalding we will practice phonograms 1-54 (You should have a set of these cards which stays at home). We will continue to practice manuscript so that we can move on to cursive in the future. It is very important that they write legibly in manuscript, for the development of cursive. Reading comprehension can be improved by a child’s knowledge of proper letter formation.

In our history curriculum, we begin with map skills and in science we begin with meteorology. We talked about categorizing and we’ll continue this week with cloud identification.

We will begin reading the Wizard of Oz this week so if your child’s book is at home, please have them bring it. If you have ordered the book but it has not arrived yet, please don’t worry, they will share with their partners. If you have not ordered it, please do so ASAP. This book will stay at school while we are doing this unit.

If you ordered phonogram cards, they are in the office and I will pick them up for your child so that they can make it home to you. If you have not yet ordered them please do so ASAP. (The office can tell you if you are not sure if you ordered them or not. Or if you’re not sure how to order them.)
We will start the weekly Reading Log this week. I will send the worksheet home on Monday.

You can communicate with me via email or the “take home” folder. Just put your note on the “complete and return” side and I will see it. I will try to get back with you within 24 hours. Please clear out the “keep at home” side each day and check and sign the agenda each day!

Thank you so much for all the supplies. I feel truly blessed to be working here with parents who are involved and helpful and with an administration that enables us to succeed!
